Sports Are All Designed On The Pattern Of War Making Sportsman Spirit But A Slogan Alone

Violence in Sports

Sports Vs Sportsman Spirit:

Sports and sportsman spirit have come to be in conflict with each other simply owing to the way the sports as one of the most popular social institutions have been designed all over the world.

Why do we play sports?

I think a rational answer should be ‘to enjoy and get entertained’.

We enjoy the skillfulness that is required in order to make strong and subtle moves in sports and their strong and subtle responses by the opponent players or teams making it all an awe-inspiring scene not only for the players but for the spectators as well.

Win Or Lose:

It would be good enough if it were treated and celebrated like a festival to inspire awe in the players and spectators. But their designers went a step ahead and tagged the same moves and counter-moves with victory and defeat introducing the element of ego in their aesthetics.

Who wants to get defeated? No one does!

Everyone wants to win.

Thus winning turned out to be the prime motto of playing them and the beauty of the skillful moves got pushed to the margin. The result of the sporting event turned to be more important than the enjoyment and the entertainment springing out of the aesthetics of the awe-inspiring moves.

We humans have a very crude habit of quantizing quality which tends to kill the subtleness of the quality.

Brute Force to Win:

Then brute force becomes the rule of the game.

Let’s ask the same question again…

Why do we play sports?

This time the answer is going to be ‘in order to win’!

Can you see how the motive to play changed diametrically opposite to the spirit of the sport this time?

And this is what inspires us to play sports in the present day scenario which is to win it at any cost.

Sports have been designed on the model of war.

Everything Is Fair in Love and War:

Yes, it’s an old adage that everything is fair in love and war!

So, everything is fair in sports including doping, betting, hurting, conspiring, cheating, violence and blackmailing.

Sports are following in the footsteps of divisive politics and unethical business practices.

Where is the existence of sportsman spirit left?

It’s only left in the sloganeering aimed at glamorizing sports for what they are no more today!
